So... what's this all about?"The Mischief Manifesto" is an upcoming ball-jointed doll web comic that's been in the works for a few years now. It centers around an explorer by the name of Ansell Silviatti (along with an unfortunate tagalong by the name of Judas "Jude" South) and their adventures as they travel the world in search of answers to an ancient riddle embedded in an old family heirloom.
Right! Cool! Wait. Ball-jointed what now?Ball-jointed dolls, in its modern use, is the Asian sensation that's sweeping the nation! And by "the nation", I mean those crazy enough to spend a couple hundred on a doll. Designed to be highly poseable and customizable, they're made of a hard, thick resin and have eyes, wigs, clothes, and accessories that are completely interchangeable.
Those face-ups are nifty! Do you paint them yourself?Yes and no. I never start off with a blank slate, I always end up purchasing a doll with a factory default face-up. Then I simply add and remove where I see fit. It might technically be cheating, but I love the way it turns out.
A foreign explorer with a set of guns, wit, and short-shorts... isn't this all a little too 'Tomb Raider'?You're damn right it is! I won't lie, a
lot of my inspiration comes from the 'Tomb Raider' game series. Lara Croft's always been a huge influence in my life, she's definitely inspired me to pick up a gun and enroll in a few archaeology courses. But the root of this story actually goes to the woman that inspired the entire video game series: Gertrude Bell. A woman beyond her years, she was born into a wealthy family with strong political and military influences. Her family fully funded her expeditions, even if her lifestyle seemed a bit unusual and unladylike. While Ansell's not a girl, I love the idea of him being a boy of prestigious breeding, but wanting to be so much more than an heir to a large fortune.
I'd like to use one of your photos, but they all have a stamp claiming I can't!I don't frown on people using my work. As a matter of fact, I find it very flattering! All I ask is that you come to me for permission first, and give me credit for the work. After that, go for it!
